Learning theory and MOOCs
This presentation looks at specific learning theories, the idea of learning theory in general, and develops a notion of "institutional learning" (and teaching) to explain why xMOOCs have become so popular and hold (at least some) promise.

Role of Statistical Learning Theory on Probabilistic Robust Controller Synthesis Problem - Titas Bera, M. Seetharama Bhat and D. Ghose
In this paper we review the randomized algorithm based design philosophy for probabilistic robust controller synthesis and the role of empirical process theory on designing such algorithms. Among the existing polynomial time randomized algorithms some have over conservative sample complexity bounds and consequently there lies considerable scope to improve those bounds.

Feasibility study for long lifetime helium dewar - Parmley, R. T
A feasible concept for a launchable three year lifetime helium dewar was investigted. Current helium dewar designs were examined to see where the largest potential reductions in parasitic heat loads can be made. The study was also devoted to examining support concepts. The support concept chosen, a passive orbital disconnect strut (PODS), has an orbital support conductance that is lower by more than an order of magnitude over current tension band supports...

A new non-eddy viscosity subgrid-scale model and its application to channel flow - Shah, K. B.
To date, most large-eddy simulations (LES) have been carried out with eddy viscosity subgrid scale (SGS) models, with only a few exceptions that used the mixed model. Even though the assumptions behind Smagorinsky's model are rather stringent, it has been applied successfully to a variety of turbulent flows. This success is attributed to the ability of eddy viscosity models to drain energy from large scales, thus simulating the dissipative nature of turbulence...

Predicting high school completion using student performance in high school algebra : a mixed methods research study - Chiado, Wendy S.
Too many of our nation's youth have failed to complete high school. Determining why so many of our nation's students fail to graduate is a complex, multi-faceted problem and beyond the scope of any one study. The study presented herein utilized a thirteen-step mixed methods model developed by Leech and Onwuegbuzie (2007) to demonstrate within a large urban Rocky Mountain school district, the existence of a significant relationship between high school algebra performance and high school completio...

Progress Toward Overset-Grid Moving Body Capability for USM3D Unstructured Flow Solver - Pandyna, Mohagna J.
A static and dynamic Chimera overset-grid capability is added to an established NASA tetrahedral unstructured parallel Navier-Stokes flow solver, USM3D. Modifications to the solver primarily consist of a few strategic calls to the Donor interpolation Receptor Transaction library (DiRTlib) to facilitate communication of solution information between various grids. The assembly of multiple overlapping grids into a single-zone composite grid is performed by the Structured, Unstructured and Generaliz...

Reduction of Model Complexity by Active Control - Bukley, Angelia P.
The mathematical models of many dynamic systems of interest in the aerospace industry are inherently complex and of high order. Rather than grapple with the full-complexity models for such systems, the control designers often elect to derive low-order, reduced-complexity models for which a control system can be designed. The subject of model-order reduction has received a significant amount of attention in control engineering literature...

WHY Do These KIDS LOVE SCHOOL? - Dorothy Fadiman with KTEH-TV (PBS)
This award-winning film features nine unique schools, both public and private, California to East Harlem. In these unique schools relationship, creative thinking, and direct experience are valued above memorization of facts. As we struggle with issues of how to provide a quality education for all children, we might look to these successful schools where teachers, students, parents and administrators are involved in creating supportive educational environments...
